Get into the rain-forest with a short walk

Lookout Track/Surveyors Monument 5 minutes to top; 15mins loop track

Take a walk to the lookout over the Village. The Surveyors Monument beside the viewing platform was built by the Westland Surveyors to commemorate the centenary of the founding of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors in 1888. Survey work began in Westland in 1867 with the first topographical map published the following year. The monument is a replica of the iron beacons used in the triangulation surveys of Westland. The hanging vanes move in the slightest wind and the moving reflection from them meant the surveyors could see them from long distances.

Manuka Track 10mins from village to Gold Claim area.

An original historic track, which was the roadway for early gold miners and pack horses, to the goldfields of the area.
