(Programme Sample 2)

More than simple shopping, this day explores the close relationship between mining and trading. The reasons for traders to set up business, the risks involved and the impact of supply and demand on profit and loss.

  • A Short History:  PowerPoint presentation about the West Coast and the beginnings of trade.
  • Tour of Shantytown:  A closer look at the shops and what they sold and why.
  • Group activities. A rotation of five different tasks:
    1. Making Ends Meet. Given a limited budget and a set of criteria, work out the priorities for spending for a typical mining family.
    2. Being a packer. Packing goods and delivering them as they did before the arrival of horses.
    3. The Hotel Owner. With 400 hotels in Hokitika competition for trade was fierce. Design a show and perform an extract from it for the passers by.
    4. The Gold Dealer. First find your "gold" then seek out the gold buyer, get it weighed on real gold scales and do a deal. Watch out for the devious gold dealer who is out to cheat ignorant miners.
    5. Chinese Market Gardeners.  Collect real vegetables and jog trot around the town trying to sell them. The Shantytown staff are hard bargainers!

A fast moving day that can be adapted to all age ranges from Y3 upwards. Tasks can be changed to suit your Learning Objectives.
