The Shantytown collection is estimated to contain about 10,000 objects, 700 photos, 300 archives and over 100 textiles.
The role of the Collections department includes receiving donations, cataloguing the collection, storing items appropriately, and displaying the collection suitably. Cataloguing is done on Past Perfect museum software. Each item has a detailed description and a digital photograph is attached to each record. The collection is assessed for its suitability for the displays and/or for conservation work.
Our job also includes revamping existing displays including signage and information panels. We monitor the displays and building appearance weekly for any maintenance work.
We continue to collect items and receive donations that fit with our Collection policy guidelines. Generally we collect items from the local area or objects that maybe linked to a family that lived on the West Coast before the 1930s.
We have a few significant pieces in our collections including, furniture, clothing, photos and buildings. Collecting for Shantytown began in 1968 when Barney Sutherland started his quest to create Shantytown. The donations came from all over New Zealand and including some from Australia.
We are available to answer enquires from the public regarding items in our collection. Email us at collections@shantytown.co.nz.
